Clean seas whyalla
It's third time lucky for the seafood company, after council knocked back previous proposals for use of the marina citing environmental concerns. Council have negotiated a three-year deal with Clean Seas subject to strict conditions and independent environmental monitoring and regulations of their activities at Point Lowly.
The motion to negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding MoU was passed at a special council meeting held on Monday, with a press release from council indicating the operations will "bring a new industry to Whyalla, creating job opportunities and supply chain spend that adds value to our economy". The report highlighted that council's licence for the marina provides for commercial fishing opportunities, and that an independent assessment of the facility deemed it to be suitable - with upgrades - for the proposed operations.
For these reasons, a decision to not grant Clean Seas access to the marina could be viewed by the state government as unreasonable. As the owners of the Point Lowly Marina, the state government could then reclaim care and control of the marina from council.
This would remove council's ability to impose restrictions on the use of the facility to minimise potential impacts and to represent the community in any ongoing negotiations with the government, which was a key point of contention for councillors.
